Strategic Behavioral Intervention Series: Individual Reward Systems

Strategic Behavioral Intervention Series: Individual Reward Systems

In order to encourage students toward meaningful and long-lasting behavioral change, the student must first learn the new behavioral skill expected of them and/or be motivated to execute the appropriate behavior. Individual reward systems are defined as planned incentives, which serve as a valuable tool in supporting the student’s use and generalization of a new desired behavior. An individual reward system provides a student with consistently positive responses for appropriate behavior and a concrete and meaningful motivator to work toward behavioral goals. When implemented with fidelity along with a specific teaching component, an individual reward system assists student learning, application, and internalization of new and valuable behavioral skills.
