SELPA Academies
The El Dorado Charter SELPA facilitates in-depth trainings called Academies in five key areas: Leadership Academy, Teacher Academy, Paraeducator Academy, School Psychologist Academy, and Speech-Language Pathologist Academy. These academies are geared towards educators in their respective positions looking to improve the outcomes of students with disabilities.
Leadership Academy

Leadership Academy 2024

Long Beach, CA

The Leadership Academy is an in-person weeklong training focusing on critical skill development to administer special education programs and staff effectively. This training brings together professionals from across California and is targeted toward current and new special education administrators. Participants focus on developing proficiency in understanding and applying essential skills for providing special education support and services tailored to the individual charter school’s mission, community, and student population. The Leadership Academy focuses on five core special education modules:

  • Leadership in Special Education
  • Program Design and Implementation
  • Student Performance and Outcomes
  • Fiscal and Resource Management
  • Compliance and Legal Responsibilities

The El Dorado Charter SELPA subsidizes the program fees for all active partners. Participants are responsible for the cost of travel, lodging, breakfast, and dinner.

Teacher Academy

Teacher Academy is a one-day in-person institute geared towards newer special education teachers (within their first three years of practice). It focuses on research-based content and activities that improve the outcomes of students with disabilities.

  • Ensure educational benefit for students with disabilities by developing a reasonably calculated, compliant IEP when determining FAPE in the LRE.
  • Design and deliver specialized academic instruction, including classroom adaptations, based on assessment information.
  • Identify and implement positive, preventative behavior management techniques.
  • Practice and improve communication and facilitation skills.
  • Understand qualifying disability categories and implications for individualized program design.
  • Identify the continuum of placement/support options and review various inclusive practices, including co-teaching, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiated instruction, and site/classroom climate (including students with moderate/severe disabilities).
  • Explore general education initiatives and structures that directly impact special education, such as Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI2), Positive Behavioral Interventions (PBIS), Student Study Team (SST) meetings, and 504 Plan development.
Registration for 2023-24 Teacher Academy is currently open. Participants are welcome to attend any regional training.

Psychologist Academy


The School Psychologist Academy is a one-day virtual training aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of School Psychologists within a Charter setting. The academy will incorporate best practices, review research -based content, and provide opportunities for collaboration. This event will enable practitioners to network and gain access to resources that can be utilized and built upon in practice. The School Psychologist Professional Learning Community (PLC) will be held the following day to provide for additional collaboration and networking opportunities. Participants are encouraged to attend both events.

School Psychologist

Paraeducator Academy

Paraeducator Academy is a virtual one-day training aimed at increasing the knowledge and skills of paraeducators. Under the supervision of an appropriately credentialed educator, paraeducators are responsible for assisting students with disabilities in the least restrictive setting as outlined in the IEP. To be effective in this vital role and to ensure positive student outcomes, paraeducators require a clear understanding of the delivery of individualized adaptations and educational supports for students across school settings.
